Exploring & Manipulating Data Module 05

 This week's lab worked on using search cursors, lists, and dictionaries. Using a search cursor a dictionary was created and populated the name, feature type, and population of each County Seat city in New Mexico.

The first screenshot below shows that a new file geodatabase(fGDB) was created. As well as a list of all feature classes copied over to the new fGDB.



The next screenshots show the search cursor for the cities feature class that retrieves the Name, Feature Type, and Population.


The last screenshot show the dictionary that was populated to show the name and populations of all County Seat cities in New Mexico.


I had the most trouble with using a for loop to populate the dictionary of all County Seat cities. I used a similar for loop as I did for the search cursor. However by researching and reading, a for loop using the cursor can only be used once in a code. I created a new cursor to be able to populate the dictionary of all County Seat cities.

  First week of learning GIS! During this week's introductory lab, I began building the groundwork for mastering the software. The lab focused on the basics of ArcGIS and how to navigate the software. While the program initially seemed straightforward to navigate, the overview lesson went into greater detail on various features within the software. Upon completing the first lesson, I feel more comfortable in navigating the software and how it can be used to better understand data. I am happy with how my first map turned out, mapping different major cities across the globe. I eagerly anticipate upcoming lessons to further my knowledge and understanding using ArcGIS.

I am currently working full time for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Final - Bobwhite-Manatee Transmission Line

In this final lab we used multiple skills learned throughout the course to analyze the proposed route for a transmission line from Manatee County to Sarasota County. The four main criteria that needed to be analyzed were environmentally sensitive lands, homes, schools, and the length of the transmission line. Although learning the technical aspects of ArcGIS was challenging for me, but I enjoyed the challenge and see everything come together in a final product.  Bobwhite Manatee Transmission Line Transcript
