Special Topics Precision & Accuracy Lab 1

Precision and accuracy are important in data to ensure that you are getting the most reliable results possible. Precision measures how close the data is to itself, while accuracy measures how close the data is to the true value. In this first lab data points were used to find the precision and accuracy of them. The points were averaged horizontally and vertically to make an average point location. 3 buffers 50%, 68%, and 95% from the average point were used to determine the precision of the points. The true point was then given to see how accurate the results were.  Given the results of the true value and average point location is a few meters apart, it shows the importance of accurate and precise data and why having good data quality is important.  Average horizontal: 82.318883W Average vertical: 27.825849N Average altitude: 28.5m Horizontal precision 68%: 4.5m Vertical precision 68%: 5.9m
